As part of a randomized controlled trial of self-hypnosis for intra-partum pain relief the SHIP Trial we conducted qualitative interviews with women randomized to the intervention arm to explore their views and experiences of using self-hypnosis during labour and birth. Participants were randomly selected from the intervention arm of the study, which consisted of two antenatal self-hypnosis training sessions and a supporting CD that women were encouraged to listen to daily from 32 weeks gestation until the birth of their baby.
What Is Hypnosis?
HUMAN givens therapists, with good intentions, are no doubt accustomed to viewing hypnosis, however we might term it, as a force for good. Using this procedure can, indeed, lead to powerful therapeutic results but it can also be powerfully harmful, depending upon the ideas absorbed by the person in trance. Therefore, it is important that it is always used judiciously.
There are competing theories explaining hypnosis and related phenomena. Altered state theories see hypnosis as an altered state of mind or trance , marked by a level of awareness different from the ordinary state of consciousness. During hypnosis, a person is said to have heightened focus and concentration and an increased response to suggestions. The use of hypnosis for therapeutic purposes is referred to as " hypnotherapy ", while its use as a form of entertainment for an audience is known as " stage hypnosis ," a form of mentalism. Hypnosis for pain management "is likely to decrease acute and chronic pain in most individuals".
